I continue to be amazed at how many patients that I interview prior to surgery that go all day without eating and then will overeat in the evening. One would think that not eating would be a good way to lose weight. However, the problem with that theory is that your metabolism shuts down. Although I am not a nutritionist, my friends who are explain to me that it is so vital to eat regularly to lose weight. If you go all day without eating and then have a big meal your body hangs on to those calories.
Think of your metabolism like a fire that you have to stoke. You need to continue to feed the flame to keep it going. So this is where the protein comes in. Your mantra after surgery should be \"Protein, protein, protein.\" Every time you sit down to eat, eat the protein on your plate first so you fill up on that first. The more protein the more fat you burn and the less you will be hungry.
There are a lot of great ways to sneak protein in your diet. Several protein powders out there--like Any Whey--can be added to your morning coffee or basically anything. So for those of you who say that you don\'t feel hungry at breakfast time--add it to your morning beverage.
Did you have your 60 to 100 grams of protein today? If not, better get started.
